1981–2000  Redbone

Drummer for the recording artist Redbone

THUNDERHAND JOE,   while working as the powerhouse drummer for the recording artist Redbone, dazzled audiences all over the world.  Redbone is the most successful Native American Rock & Roll  band in the history of music. Joe's high energy and incredible showmanship was the driving force behind the band for 20 years. The band owes much of its success over the years to Thunderhand's  Rock Solid Performances.

Their first commercial success came with the single "Maggie" from their second album Potlatch in 1970, and two other  hit singles followed - "The Witch Queen of New Orleans" (1971, #21 on the Billboard Hot 100). and "Come and Get Your Love" (1974, #5 on the Billboard Hot 100). Recorded with Redbone. (One World One Planet / 21st Century Medicine Man)

Former drummer for the powerhouse Native rock group Redbone, 'Thunderhand Joe' (Mescalero Apache) Gonzales and his band are a sweet confection of rhythm and blues, rock and roll and sizzling funk! An amazing band, 'Joe and the Show' are one of the best 'live' bands in Indian Country today! Thrilling audiences from coast to coast, this California quartet plays more dates each year than Cheap Trick! Beginning his musical career playing with one of the most successful Native American groups of all time, 'Thunderhand Joe' spent his musical formative years with the infamous Vegas brothers (Pat and Lolly). Touring with Redbone (remember '70's monster hits like "Witch Queen of New Orleans" and "Come and Get Your Love") was invaluable experience, learning the 'ins and outs' of the music business, production, writing and, of course, recording. By the early 1990s, 'Thunderhand Joe' was redirecting his creative energies into his own unique brand of rock and roll. After sixteen years on the road, the journeyman drummer decided that the time was right. He went out on his own and formed 'Thunderhand Joe and the Medicine Show'! The result was an original blend of classic rock, funk and rhythm and blues. Becoming one of the hardest working bands in the Native music business, 'Thunderhand Joe' took his show on the road. On a whirlwind of nonstop touring, 'Thunderhand Joe' played everywhere from Foxwoods to Ute Mountain, from Potawatomi to Bobby's Seminole Village, playing gaming facilities, fairs and festivals all across the country. In the process the band has had the honor of sharing the stage with such Native notables as Robbie Robertson, Charlie Hill, Rita Coolidge and Crystal Gayle. In 2004, 'Thunderhand Joe' released his first, self-titled CD, Thunderhand Joe and the Medicine Show. An instant hit with fans and Native radio stations across the U. S. and Canada, the CD took off. Songs like "Over and Over", "Shalaka Laka" and "Seminole Man" not only displayed 'Thunderhand Joe's' strong song writing ability, but his band's versatility as well. 'Thunderhand Joe and the Medicine Show' were on their way! 'Thunderhand Joe' makes his home in Whittier, California.

Thunderhand Joe and the Medicine Show have built following thrilling fans with songs that celebrate the Native American culture. Jingle Dress, Seminole Man and Wounded Knee are songs as such that capture the imagination through lyrics and music. Thunderhand Joe paints lyrical pictures with songs that take you from a swampy southern bayou feel, to the classic American Rock and Roll sound that launched a thousand careers. Influenced heavily by his years with Redbone, Thunderhand Joe recognizes the importance of a cultural exchange between people. His songs are the essence of this exchange. Thunderhand Joe employs a wealth of talent, style and personality as he shows off his own blend of Rock & Roll, Rhythm & Blues, and a Country mix. His unplugged acoustic performances make for a wonderfully intimate time for young and old alike. His tribute to Redbone will blow you away.  He captures the energy of the super groups early days with inspiring performances that keep you mesmerized and totally involved.

Thunderhand Joe and the Medicine Show have dazzled audiences all over the country for years. With the release of his self-titled CD Thunderhand Joe and the Medicines Show the band is rock'n across America. You can see the band at Indian Gaming facilities; Fairs and Festivals all over the U.S. and Canada. This is truly one of the most exceptionally unique bands you'll ever hear, an extraordinary band with a phenomenal sound.
